Compression Moulded vs Extruded Ground Protection Mats

Compression Moulded Mats vs Extruded Mats: Choosing the Right Option for Your Site

Choosing the right ground protection mat is about more than just picking what is available or cheapest. The way a mat is manufactured makes a real difference to how it performs out on site. At GroundGuards, we supply both compression moulded and extruded mats, each with their own strengths. Knowing the difference can help you make the right call for your next project.

How Are These Mats Made?

Compression moulded mats, like our EnviroMat, are created by pressing a blend of plastics at high heat and pressure inside a mould. This method produces a mat that is solid and consistent all the way through. The fibres and plastic are tightly bonded, leaving no weak spots or hollow areas.

Extruded mats, such as LiteTrack, are made by forcing molten plastic through a shaped die. This forms a continuous sheet which is then cut into mats. The process is quicker and uses less material, so the result is a mat that is lighter and sometimes a bit more flexible, with a more layered or less dense structure.

Why Does Manufacturing Matter?

You see the difference as soon as these mats are put to work on a live project. EnviroMat, as a compression moulded product, is built for demanding conditions and repeated use. It can take the weight of trucks, plant, and tracked vehicles without splitting or losing shape. If you were to cut through an EnviroMat, you would find the same solid construction from top to bottom. This strength helps to distribute weight, protect the ground underneath, and keep access routes safe and stable.

LiteTrack, our extruded mat, is much lighter and easier to handle. It is ideal for jobs where you only need to move pedestrians, trolleys, or light equipment across firm ground. It works well for short-term or occasional use, but it is not suitable for heavy vehicles, plant, or soft, muddy ground. In these situations, LiteTrack can flex or even crack under too much pressure.

EnviroMat vs LiteTrack: A Practical Comparison

  • Load Capacity: EnviroMat handles far higher weight loadings and is designed for plant and HGVs. LiteTrack is best kept for lighter jobs.
  • Durability: Compression moulded mats like EnviroMat last much longer, even after years of hard use. LiteTrack is a good solution for light, temporary access, but not for repeated or tough site conditions.
  • Ground Protection: EnviroMat provides better ground protection, spreading weight more evenly and preventing ruts. LiteTrack suits pedestrian routes over firm surfaces but will not protect soft or sensitive ground from damage.
  • Value for Money: While EnviroMat costs more at the outset, it delivers a longer working life and better protection. LiteTrack is cost-effective for occasional, light use, but not a replacement for a more robust solution.

Which Mat Should You Choose?

If you are running heavy equipment, working on soft or uneven ground, or need a mat that will perform year after year, choose a compression moulded mat like EnviroMat. For short events, pedestrian access, or sites where weight and quick handling are priorities, LiteTrack can be the right choice.

If you are not sure which product will best suit your needs, our team is always on hand to offer practical advice. We can help you find the mat that matches your application, ensuring you get the best results from your investment and peace of mind on site.
