The Challenge: Heavy Vehicle Access Across a School Playing Field
Sandringham School was preparing for the construction of a new synthetic sports pitch, a project that required significant vehicle access across its existing playing fields. With around 400 tipper loads of stone and 150 loads of tarmac scheduled for delivery, the school was understandably concerned about the risk of rutting, ground damage and long-term impact to the grass surfaces.
It was essential to find a solution that would not only protect the field but also allow for safe and efficient movement of heavy trucks throughout the site.
The GroundGuards Solution: XtremeMat Trackway
To meet the demands of the job, GroundGuards recommended the use of XtremeMat, a heavy duty ground protection system designed for high traffic and high load applications. Each mat measures four metres by two metres and features overlapping flange joints that interlock securely, providing a continuous surface with enhanced strength and support.
The school hired 50 mats for a 12 week period, using them to build a robust temporary roadway and turning area. This setup allowed vehicles to access the construction zone without needing to reverse through the busy school car park, helping to maintain site safety at all times.
Installation was completed in just over two hours using a telehandler with grab forks, meaning the access route was operational with minimal disruption to the school day.

The XtremeMat access road performed exactly as intended. It kept the school’s grounds clean and undamaged while providing a safe and stable surface for all deliveries throughout the build. The roadway not only maintained the high standards expected on school grounds but also offered an aesthetically neat and professional finish.
