The Challenge: A Sensitive Access Route through Forest Terrain

At Whyteleafe Railway Station in Croydon, essential long-term maintenance works required access for cranes and heavy construction vehicles. The route to site passed through a woodland area, where protecting the surrounding ecology and minimising ground disturbance was a top priority. Traditional haul roads would risk damage to tree roots and the forest floor, making an alternative solution necessary for this sensitive environment.

The GroundGuards Solution: MaxiTrack Haul Road

GroundGuards recommended MaxiTrack as the most suitable ground protection system for the project. Engineered for strength and flexibility, MaxiTrack is guaranteed unbreakable by vehicles up to 130 tonnes. Each mat is lightweight at just 40kg, allowing them to be laid and repositioned by hand without the need for heavy lifting equipment.

The mats’ overlapping flange joints create a strong, continuous surface that resists movement and prevents mud from rising through the track. With the ability to follow natural ground contours, MaxiTrack was ideal for the uneven woodland terrain. A staggered layout enhanced strength and ensured a seamless connection across the length of the haul road.

Results & Outcome: Fast Installation, Safe Operation

A durable, long-term haul road was successfully constructed through the woodland, enabling uninterrupted access for heavy machinery throughout the works. The ground remained protected, with minimal disturbance to the surrounding ecosystem. The client was highly satisfied with the performance of the MaxiTrack system, praising its fast deployment and suitability for the environmentally sensitive setting.
