The Challenge: Taxiing an Airbus Over Crumbling Ground
At Rock Barracks, RAF Woodbridge, the British Army was preparing for a unique event. The Airbus A400M Atlas, a huge four engine military transport aircraft, was due to land on a simulated desert airstrip as part of its development trials.
However, while the landing would take place on a pre-prepared surface, the aircraft still needed to taxi safely across a wide section of ageing and deteriorating concrete. With an 8 week window for testing, the site required a durable, temporary taxiway that could handle extreme weight without damaging the aircraft or worsening the ground beneath. At stake was the success of a critical military exercise.
The GroundGuards Solution: MultiTrack for Heavy Duty Support
After discussions with the GroundGuards team, MultiTrack was identified as the best solution. It offered the strength and flexibility required to bridge the cracked and uneven surface without risk to the aircraft.
MultiTrack boards weigh just 39kg each but are engineered to carry up to 120 tonnes. This made them ideal for the A400M's maximum gross weight. Their manageable weight also allowed for fast and efficient installation, keeping labour costs down and timelines tight.
Over 3,600m² of MultiTrack was laid to form a robust, flat surface across the entire taxiway route. Despite the uneven and fragmented substrate, the mats linked seamlessly, creating a continuous platform strong enough for one of the world’s largest military aircraft.
Results & Outcome: A Safe Taxiway Completed On Time
The result was a professional, well laid temporary taxiway that met every requirement of the trial. The A400M was able to taxi across the site smoothly and safely, without any damage to the aircraft or the underlying ground.
The project was completed quickly and efficiently, and the client was extremely pleased with both the performance of the mats and the speed of delivery. The success of the trial demonstrated the capability of MultiTrack to perform in high weight, high stakes environments.
