The Challenge: Field Access for Drilling Near the River Kent

Near the River Kent in Kendal, a drilling contractor needed to carry out borehole testing across a series of open fields. With heavy equipment in tow and soft ground underfoot, the team required a reliable way to reach their test locations without causing surface damage or getting stuck.

Although ground conditions were generally dry and firm, there was still a risk of rutting and wear from repeated vehicle movements, especially in environmentally sensitive areas. The team needed a fast, lightweight, and non-invasive solution to preserve the integrity of the fields throughout the work.

The GroundGuards Solution: MultiTrack Mats

GroundGuards supplied MultiTrack mats to create a stable temporary roadway across the site. Each mat weighs just 39kg, making them easy to handle and quick to deploy without the need for heavy machinery. Despite their low weight, MultiTrack mats are incredibly strong and can support vehicles and equipment weighing up to 120 tonnes.

The mats linked together securely using a robust metal connector system, forming a firm and continuous surface. This created safe access routes across the field, with enough grip to prevent slippage and enough strength to carry plant and kit without ground disturbance. Installation was simple, with the track laid out from the gate to each working zone in minimal time.

Results & Outcome: Access Secured, Ground Preserved

Thanks to MultiTrack, the drilling team completed their work efficiently and without damaging the site. Once removed, the mats left the grassland underneath in excellent condition.
