The Challenge: Testing Strength Against a Monster Machine

To prove the strength of GroundGuards’ MaxiTrack system, we set out to test it under extreme conditions. The goal was to demonstrate its ability to withstand loads of up to 130 tonnes, a claim that needed to be validated by real-world results.

We invited Terex to bring one of their enormous dumper trucks to a trial site in Glasgow. Built for the toughest mining and quarrying jobs, these machines weigh over 100 tonnes when loaded and would put MaxiTrack’s structural integrity and grip to the test.

The GroundGuards Solution: Building a High Traction Temporary Road

The site chosen for the test featured sloping, uneven ground with soft grassy terrain. These were challenging conditions for any temporary access road. GroundGuards constructed a roadway using MaxiTrack mats, each measuring 1.8 metres by 0.9 metres and fitted with the SmartGrip tread pattern for improved traction.

The mats were securely connected in a staggered formation to handle the heavy wheel loads and to minimise mud ingress between panels. No groundwork preparation or reinforcement was needed.

Once installed, the Terex dumper was driven across the mats multiple times, performing tight turns and reversing manoeuvres to simulate real site usage.

Results and Outcome: No Breakages, No Movement, No Problem

Despite the truck’s immense weight and off-road demands, the MaxiTrack mats showed no signs of cracking or shifting. The high traction surface allowed the Terex to climb and descend the slope with confidence, while the underlying ground was left completely intact.

The successful test reaffirmed MaxiTrack’s status as a heavy duty, reusable matting solution suitable for the most demanding sites. It proved that with the right ground protection, even 100 tonne trucks can operate safely on soft ground.
