The Challenge: Low Overhead Clearance and Soft Ground
At a National Grid site in Waltham Abbey, Enfield, a substation maintenance company faced a difficult access challenge. MEWPs and telehandlers needed to move across a loose gravel surface, but overhead transmission lines hung unusually low across the area. Using cranes or heavy lifting gear to install ground protection mats was ruled out due to health and safety risks. The team needed a system that could be installed entirely by hand while still supporting heavy vehicles.
The GroundGuards Solution: MaxiTrack Ground Protection
GroundGuards recommended the MaxiTrack system as the ideal solution. Each mat weighs just 40kg, making it light enough to be carried and installed manually by two operatives. Despite its portability, MaxiTrack offers impressive strength, capable of handling loads up to 130 tonnes thanks to its overlapping flange joints and tough plastic structure.
Over several hours, the team hand-laid a series of MaxiTrack mats to create a stable temporary roadway across the site. No cranes or mechanical lifting equipment were required, making the whole process safer and quicker to complete in a restricted environment.
Results & Outcome: A Smooth Project and Future Potential
The six-week hire project went ahead without issue. MaxiTrack provided the reliable, firm surface needed for access and operations. The ground remained protected, the equipment stayed stable, and the client was impressed. In fact, they were so pleased with the outcome that they are now considering using MaxiTrack again at their next project site in Coventry.
