The Challenge: Managing Ground on Busy Housing Sites
At two Barratt Homes developments in Kingsley Meadows, Harrogate, and Northampton, ground conditions were causing serious access issues.
In Harrogate, the main concern was a rapidly deteriorating access road, worn down by constant construction traffic. Meanwhile, the Northampton site faced soft, wet conditions that were leading to rutting and impassable areas. Both sites needed a fast, practical solution that would support heavy plant and machinery while preventing further ground damage.
The GroundGuards Solution: MaxiTrack Trackway
To overcome these issues, GroundGuards supplied its durable MaxiTrack system. These 1.8 by 0.9 metre mats are designed with overlapping flanges for secure joins and even load distribution, supporting weights of up to 130 tonnes.
At both locations, MaxiTrack was quickly laid to create stable temporary haul roads. The mats were delivered promptly and installed by site teams without the need for specialist equipment. Despite initial doubts from the crews, the mats performed consistently well, even under the strain of regular heavy vehicle movement.
Results and Outcome: A Reliable, Reusable Access System
At Kingsley Meadows, MaxiTrack kept traffic flowing on the main access route throughout the build. The mats remained intact and in place for the duration of the project, ready for reuse on future phases.
In Northampton, installation of MaxiTrack allowed the project to continue without delay. The site team could move plant across the soft ground safely, minimising disruption and eliminating the need for constant regrading or ground repairs.
