The Challenge: A Durable Access Solution for Heavy Rail Vehicles

As part of major electrification works, Network Rail needed to establish a Road Rail Access Point (RRAP) at their railway station in Newport, Wales. The access point had to safely support a range of construction vehicles, including 50 tonne road/rail excavators, dumper trucks and commercial vans, as they moved from the highway onto the track.

Traditionally, such access might be created using temporary tarmac. However, this approach carries a high reinstatement cost and is vulnerable to surface damage, especially under the weight and frequency of plant and machinery. Network Rail sought a more robust and reusable alternative.

The GroundGuards Solution: MaxiTrack Modular Roadway

GroundGuards recommended MaxiTrack as the ideal solution to protect the existing hard surface while creating a stable and safe RRAP.

MaxiTrack mats are made from tough, reinforced plastic and weigh just 40kg each, making them easy to install by hand without the need for lifting equipment. Their clever overlapping flange system and secure fixings lock the mats firmly in place, even when machinery is turning or reversing.

For this project, 180 MaxiTrack mats were deployed to construct a defined access route. The mats’ SmartGrip tread provided essential traction for vehicles in all weather conditions, while their modular design ensured flexibility to suit the site’s layout and loading requirements.

Installation was completed quickly and efficiently, with the mats ready to be reused on future projects, helping Network Rail avoid waste and reduce long-term costs.

Results & Outcome: Reliable Access, No Surface Damage

The completed RRAP enabled all required construction activity to proceed smoothly. The tarmac and underlying infrastructure were fully protected throughout the works, avoiding costly repairs or delays. Network Rail were impressed by the simplicity, strength and value of the MaxiTrack system, and appreciated the long-term reusability it offered compared to traditional surface reinstatement.
