The Challenge: Ensuring Safety and Social Distancing
A new Covid-19 Test Centre was set up on a grass field in West Yorkshire at the height of the pandemic. With thousands of people expected to pass through the site over several months, the client needed to create a safe and structured access route to and from a series of portable cabins.
The ground was already soft from winter weather, and the volume of foot traffic risked turning the field into a muddy hazard. Beyond the challenge of keeping people safe from slips and trips, there was also a critical need to maintain two-metre social distancing along the walkway, especially during queueing periods.
The GroundGuards Solution: FastCoverPlus and CoviDistance Packs
Drawing on previous experience supporting similar Covid Test Centres in Liverpool, Suffolk and Wolverhampton, GroundGuards recommended FastCoverPlus mats configured with the CoviDistance Pack.
Each CoviDistance Pack includes eight black FastCoverPlus mats and two yellow ones, allowing every fifth mat to act as a visual cue for social distancing. This provided a durable, clear, and long-term solution compared to painted markings.
FastCoverPlus mats measure 1.2m x 0.6m and weigh just 14.5kg. Their integrated hand holes made them easy to carry and install by hand, without tools or joiners. Two workers were able to install over 100 metres of walkway in less than half a day.
The anti-slip surface improved safety on wet grass, and once in place, the mats remained strong and securely interlocked to withstand continuous use throughout the pandemic.

The client was pleased with both the appearance and performance of the walkway. The alternating yellow mats helped manage distancing, while the solid black surface kept things neat and professional.
