The Challenge: Maintaining Safety During Construction
St. Peter’s School in York faced a logistical challenge during a 40-week construction programme that rendered an existing student footpath unusable. To keep pupils moving safely around the site, the school needed a temporary pedestrian route that was secure, clearly defined, and visually appropriate within the grounds. The new route would run alongside a well-kept cricket pitch, so it also had to be gentle on the surface beneath.
The GroundGuards Solution: FastCover Tiles
Following a consultation with the GroundGuards team, FastCover was identified as the most suitable product for the task. Made from 100% recycled PVC, FastCover provides a robust, anti-slip surface while maintaining a neat appearance.
The mats feature interlocking lips for strong, trip-free connections and edging ramps to allow for smooth transitions at entry and exit points. Their ability to follow the natural contours of the cricket outfield ensured the walkway remained both safe and stable without damaging the turf underneath.
Installation was straightforward and quick, with no need for machinery or specialist tools.
Results & Outcome: A Tidy, Functional Walkway
In total, 250 FastCover tiles were used to create a 100-metre-long walkway. The finished path offered pupils a clean, defined access route, allowing the school to continue daily operations without disruption. Teachers and staff praised the solution for its reliability, and the school grounds remained tidy and undamaged throughout the build.
