The Challenge: Access Across River and Farmland
Earlier this year, a directional drilling project in rural Scotland required access to both sides of a river. One side consisted of active farmland, while the other was used to set up a drilling and storage platform.
Protecting the farmland was a top priority, especially with heavy equipment and winching operations taking place nearby. Getting materials in proved difficult from the outset. Narrow country roads limited the number of mats that could be transported at a time, slowing down delivery and installation. To add to the challenge, the team faced persistent rain and snowfall during the early stages of the project.
The GroundGuards Solution: XtremeMat and MaxiTrack
To meet the demands of the site, GroundGuards supplied over 300 panels of XtremeMat and MaxiTrack. The combination was chosen for its strength, durability and suitability for soft, uneven terrain.
XtremeMat, weighing 385kg and measuring 4 metres by 2 metres, provided a heavy-duty platform for winching and drilling operations. MaxiTrack was selected to create the access routes, offering the benefit of being lightweight enough to install by hand while still supporting plant and vehicle traffic.
This flexible setup allowed the installation team to work within the tight delivery constraints and maintain progress despite the weather. Together, the mats formed a complete system of access roads and working areas that performed reliably under pressure.
Results and Outcome: Equipment Stabilised and Ground Protected
Despite the challenging site access and adverse weather, the project progressed smoothly. Machinery was deployed without issue, and the farmland remained undamaged throughout the works.
The combination of XtremeMat and MaxiTrack proved to be the right choice for the site. Both products delivered on performance, ease of use and protection, helping the client maintain operations without interruption or environmental impact.
The client was pleased with the outcome and impressed by how well the system handled both the weight and the conditions on site.
