The Challenge: A Complex Site with Low Clearance and Poor Ground
A cable project near Bognor Regis brought together several site constraints including a floodplain location, unstable ground conditions, and very limited working height. The site required a reliable haul route across soft terrain, stable platform areas for equipment, and a temporary bridge to access the far side of the works.
To add to the complexity, overhead cables hung just 10 metres above the work area. With 6 metres of clearance needed for machinery, the team had very little room to operate. Standard lifting equipment was unsuitable, so a new approach was needed to install the mats safely and within the restricted height.

Installation began with a carefully planned sequence to place mats under the limited headroom. The first section created a stable surface for bridge installation. Once the bridge was in place, matting continued on the far side to form a solid pad area and ensure continuous access for the cable works.
Each XtremeMat measures four metres by two metres and weighs 385 kilograms, so mechanical handling was required. Despite this, the team adapted their lifting methods to work efficiently within the clearance limits, maintaining safety at every stage.
Results & Outcome: Safe Access Across the Floodplain
Despite the difficult working conditions, the project was completed safely and efficiently. The mats performed exactly as required, providing a firm, non-slip surface across challenging terrain without causing damage to the floodplain.
