The Challenge: Creating Access on Sensitive Forestry Land

Deep in the woodlands of Cheshire, an extensive geotechnical investigation required access across 1.4km of undulating, sensitive forest floor. The work involved dumper trucks, drilling rigs, and light commercial vehicles moving back and forth over the course of 12 weeks. With soft ground and environmental sensitivity to consider, the client needed a robust yet low-impact trackway that could be installed efficiently and without damage to the natural terrain.

GroundGuards recommended a hybrid solution using both MaxiTrack and MultiTrack - two of our most high-performing heavy-duty mats. Their combined use allowed flexibility to adapt to variable terrain while delivering a safe and continuous surface for vehicle access.

The GroundGuards Solution: MaxiTrack and MultiTrack Hybrid System

GroundGuards recommended a hybrid solution using both MaxiTrack and MultiTrack - two of our most high-performing heavy-duty mats. Their combined use allowed flexibility to adapt to variable terrain while delivering a safe and continuous surface for vehicle access.
MaxiTrack, with its overlapping flanges and SmartGrip tread, delivered exceptional strength and traction. MultiTrack complemented it by offering slightly smaller panels ideal for tighter curves and narrower stretches of the route.

Both products are lightweight and designed for easy manual handling, eliminating the need for mechanical lifting. This enabled fast installation across the full 1.4km stretch. Over 1,600 mats were laid with staggered joints to maximise strength and stability.

Results & Outcome: Fast, Functional, and Ground-Safe

The completed roadway enabled smooth access for all vehicles without any disruption to the ground beneath. Thanks to careful design and quick delivery, the full route was laid with minimal fuss and ahead of schedule.
